about

This is the second album by Minnesota-based composer and live-electronics performer Scott L. Miller and Tallinn-based guitarist Mart Soo, "Three Free Radicals." Their collaboration continues at a distance but the fertile avant garde improvisation scene in Tallinn makes Miller’s every visit an intensely creative journey that ends in a recording studio.

This newest release on Improtest Records features Mart Soo’s fluid lyrical guitar style layered over his looped and fractured extended guitar techniques which are simultaneously feeding Miller’s Kyma system for additional digital signal tune-ups. Soo (pronounced sō) is drawing on his extensive background as a performer of free improv, jazz, minimalist music, and live electronics in the duo’s second outing, carving out beautiful long form melodies from the engine of the soundscape. In addition to his work as a performer and composer for radio, theater, and film, since 2005 Soo and Taavi Kerikmäe have curated Tallinn’s most visible improvised music series, IMPROTEST, which established its own label to distribute music of artists who have performed on the series.

Miller has a long history of electro-acoustic collaborations, and in Travelogue, he brings the depth of his sonic vocabulary developed in his through-composed works to his arsenal as an improviser. Listeners are rewarded with a fantastic journey that erases the line between where one begins and ends, immersed in an organic yet artificial new soundscape.

Mart Soo has performed and collaborated with an impressive cast of international musicians at festivals throughout Europe, Japan, and the U.S. The musicians he has worked with represent a wide and diverse range of music styles—jazz, classical, non-Western, improvised, electro-acoustic, vocal; the list is long. Some of the notable names include: Fred Frith, Xavier Charles, Brian Melvin, Markus Reuter, Uchihashi Kazuhisa, Weekend Guitar Trio, Paul Lovens, Jean-Marc Montera and Vox Clamantis.

Scott L. Miller is known for his interactive electroacoustic chamber music, ecosystemic performance pieces, and use of the Kyma sound design environment in free improv. He has been a Fulbright Scholar, a Lucas Arts Fellow, and twice been named a McKnight Composer Fellow. He is currently a Professor of Music at St. Cloud State University, Minnesota, and President of the Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the U.S. (SEAMUS).
